Each new season is an opportunity for change and to try again.

I grew up in the Kansas City area. Early fall in the Midwest is beautiful: sunshine, bright blue skies, the brilliant color of oaks and maples. Rain began on Halloween and eventually the weather rolled into cold, gray winter. We welcomed spring: trees budding, tulips blooming, robins returning. The freshness of spring was followed by hot, humid summer complete with vacation and picnics.

I’ve now lived more of my life in the South and Southwest than in the Midwest. Here, seasons are sometimes ill-defined and blur together. Fall has arrived in central Texas…..the weather is a bit cooler but it’s still quite warm.  Trees are dropping leaves but as much from the lack of rain as from seasonal factors.  I still virtually experience the distinct change of seasons. My brain feels fall and wants that fresh start. School has started, Halloween paraphernalia abounds in the stores, and that’s enough for me.

Even though there’s nearly a full quarter remaining in 2018, I’m ready to start planning for the next year. I see opportunity to:

  • Take another chance
  • Apply what I’ve learned in the past year…to do better/more in the future
  • Try something new
  • Forgive myself and others

Here’s how to capture that fresh start energy and put it to use for your business:

  • Evaluate where you’ve been, where you are, where you want to be
  • Set specific goals and ways to measure progress toward those goals
  • Develop a plan for what you will do in the next year to move you toward those goals
  • Work the plan!
  • Review accomplishments regularly and fine tune plan as needed
  • Keep a list of ideas for the future – goals, metrics, activities, contacts, everything
  • Repeat
