I played hooky Friday (03.16.2018) and explored the Austin springtime phenom that is SXSW. What a boost to my body and soul! My creativity batteries are supercharged. (And, yes, my feet are a little sore.)

There are so many ways to experience SXSW. I focus on people, fun and learning, not pricey tickets, late nights and long lines.

A few takeaways from my daytime visit:

The Convention Center “neighborhood” is a great place to walk around. Not only are there bands to see and hear, but the atmosphere and people watching are energizing. Inside, I enjoyed the Flatstock (poster art) show and sale, plus browsing the Marketplace (interesting and mundane vendors from all over).

Smart visibility by the folks at LaCroix Sparkling Water. Free hydration is always appreciated. Graciously handing out free fancy water in the middle of the desert flats of the SouthBites Food Trailer Park, with no shade and Austin temps reaching upper 80s is memorable.

Speaking of nourishment, the SouthBites dining tent reminded me of an elementary school lunch room, in a good way. Crowded, busy, chatter, hungry people refueling for the afternoon sessions.

Did someone say chocolate? I will be making a serious visit to Delysia Chocolatier after Lent.

There’s a surprise around every corner. What a treat to discover 3 Hand Stephen and his cigar box guitar. Check out his photo above.

Meeting people as you roam is easy – Hello, Austin, Dallas, Sweden! – but taking in the scene alone is fine, too.

Watching people is fun, too. Sitting in the shade on Sixth Street is a good strategy. I saw a little bit of everything with folks having fun and not misbehaving. My fashion report includes tattoos, daisy dukes, crop tops, sparkle, T-shirts, vivid hair color, pleather and sunburn.

Nearly every club door along Sixth Street was open. The music from live bands and recorded tunes was powerful (and maybe deafening). Along with the music, cool air poured out of every open door. Imagine the power consumed to cool Austin’s summer air.

The SXSW energy and spirit is contagious. Find your way to enjoy it. I understand if you don’t like the traffic or the crowds, but do consider taking in this Austin tradition. There really is something for everyone.
